This painting revisits the story of the Binding of Isaac (Genesis) presenting a contemporary view of God’s promise to Abraham. What does it mean that Abraham’s offspring will be like the sand at the seashore, inherit the gates of their enemies and nations will be blessed by their descendants? Fenton uses his own descendants and ancestors as vehicles to examine this fundamental covenant. The artist asks, does the truth come from the covenant itself or do Abraham’s descendants create their own truth by believing in the power of the covenant?
