Stories of a Painter and a Filmmaker

work prior to the year 2000 » Gertrude’s Trunk- Poor William. oil on birch panel 16″x 16″ (1988)

This is part of the Gertrude’s Trunk series. Fenton suggests that the moment in time is frozen and he compares the figures in his painting to Coply’s painting Watson and the Shark. The shark never eats Watson and is forever protected from the thrust of the spear and Watson is never pulled into the boat. All is in equilibrium. It is akin to life on a fencepost forever.
